Oil on canvas, 48 x 30 inches
Exhibited: Dominique Boisjoli Fine Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico
My gracious thanks to the collectors of this oil and two others for their Santa Fe home.
About this oil:
The idea was to create a thin and tall expression of yellow with the forest as the subject. When I first started out as an artist, yellow was the color I was most attracted to. It was so very frustrating, trying to get the yellow to sing, to do something dramatic. I had to learn that to make that yellow really take off, a lot of other moves had to be made. It was going to take some planning and practice.
In this oil, there are numerous colors, dark and light, that set up the brightest yellows in the canvas. The darks of the tree trunks make a dramatic contrast against the other glowing colors. The reds, oranges, purples and greens are all subservient to the various yellows, each brighter than the next. Everything is set up to increase the brightness like a yellow sun.
Care was taken to create an elegant work while at the same time, using a lot of paint in a free and expressive way. I’m happy with this outcome and it’s always enjoyable to spend time with the oil in the studio for a while, the finished work among the many others waiting for their day.
There are those restful moments when I’m with the finished painting and it seems like the painting is looking back at me, letting me know it is alive now and soon going out into the world
