Exhibited: Dominique Boisjoli Fine Art, Santa Fe, NM.

My gracious thanks to the collectors of this oil and two others for their Santa Fe home.

About this oil:

I was very intrigued by this composition, with the hard diagonals and the cascading line of trees. It came from a small section of a pastel demonstration done in one of my art classes.

Everything has its place here and it allows the option of numerous color combinations - so far, so good, but there is a big compositional problem. It’s that big hill, the one that dominates the middle of this landscape.

Knowing that this might not be easy and understanding that many solutions are available, I charged that hill in a number of different ways but the hill stubbornly refused to go along, looking out of place with the rest of the painting.

I kept alert to clues in the hill as it was painted again and again until I finally saw a pattern in the paint and from there, the hill became a place of glowing greens, and barely discernible, scintillating blue flowers.

With the light gliding down the hill and the red accent at the top right, the hill and all of the mass contained there came to life, holding its own against the glowing meadow and the luminescent far hills and sky.
