About this oil:

For this oil, I set out to create place where the colors are not quite common. Obviously, this is not a portrait of a place and it opens up wonderful opportunities for composition and color.

The oil started as a stand of trees with the tops completely filled in with dense foliage. After working on that idea for a few sessions, I began to like how some of the colors the foreground and the water began to luminesce in places. That became key to what I preferred for this painting… a variety of colors, each with its own radiance.

That was best accomplished by abandoning the thick forest plan. So  the forest was thinned out, allowing the newly open space in the back to provide a new and colorful source of light. By continually pushing the colors and using many that are not really found in nature, the entire scene began to take on a gossamer feel, something out of the ordinary, unique but still believable.
