New Work: Colored Veils, oil on panel, 24 x 24 inches

Updated: Nov 7

Oil on panel, 24 x 24 inches

About this oil:

Here in Colorado we have enjoyed the remarkable fall and it gave me the incentive to do a forest scene with those inspirational colors. Rather than do a fall scene of the outside of a forest, I wanted this piece be a look inside the grove with the essence of a glowing fall surrounding the viewer.

As the painting progressed, the color took precedence over detail, leaving simple shapes for the trunk and foliage with more saturated reds, oranges and golds. I noted that as I made the tree trunks darker it increased the power of the color and composition, so they were pushed even more.

As many of these paintings do once an idea is established, the oil will lead you on, suggesting changes and at times, insisting on something specific. In this case it was the light coming through the back using two different colors – pale yellows and greens, a nice subtlety.

Once it is varnished and framed, the oil will be off to a gallery but I’ll enjoy it in the studio until then.
