About this pastel
It is remarkable how these colored pieces of chalk can create entire worlds. For this pastel, I worked from my memories of how it feels to be in the woods. The forest is a chaotic place and the beauty is in the complexity if we care to look.
As a colorist, I use color combinations to illuminate the intricacies and in this case, to create a mood and sense of place. The forms are simplified and those cool blues and greens are exaggerated somewhat, but it all is balanced to heighten the experience of that beautiful calm the forests can provide.
