I was very interested in creating a group of trees, but not in the usual way. For this composition, the tops of the trees, the normal look, would only be a part of the arrangement. There would be a forest in the background that would have equal importance, and that’s how this started out.
 
Once the composition was blocked in and the yellows and golds were introduced, I became intrigued with the idea of this entire oil being yellow-driven. So what to do with the forest background? A number of colors and ideas were tried out and it finally began to come together with a combination of blue and purples on the left. 
 
At first the background was too dense, so the idea of the forest in the back remained, but with the addition of an atmospheric haze from the light coming in on the upper right. The oil was far along at this point, but someting was lacking.  After more trial and error over a series of days and sessions in the studio, the smaller, ochre-yellow background trees were added, bringing it all together. 
 
Now that the the trees had found their balance, it allowed me to create an even brighter sky and field with the yellows permeating everything. The entire effect is a moment in time of a forest infused with light in a somewhat other-worldly and joyful way.
